Well folks, we have another reporting gem on our hands.
At least this one was not an intentional coverup of a final score.
More like inaccuracy on a varsity team and who the exact competition actually was.
Here’s how it goes:
Headline in Herald-Mail (Saturday, May 1): Gaels stun Cougars behind Rosenthal
At no point in the story does it mention that St. Maria Goretti defeated the Jefferson JV team — only the 27-3 varsity Cougars, as we were left to believe.
The game was reported by a Goretti assistant coach who told our person taking the report “he only had first names from the other team,” and seemingly went out of his way to not tell us the game was against Jefferson’s JV team.
But in fact, it was OK for that person reporting to let us put in print that Caroline Rosenthal had pitched a game against Jefferson that would definitely garner headlines, having won against a powerhouse team — simply by not telling us it was a JV team.
And our person taking the game also said the caller was sure that we could track down the roster for Jefferson, even though he was told we did not have Jefferson rosters.
I’m not going to make mention of the individual by name — apologies were given to The Herald-Mail on Saturday by him and also from the head coach in an e-mail.
So, take the win off the books Goretti. We won’t recognize it against a JV team.
We will recognize your apologies, and this is a comment to everyone — let’s keep the facts straight when you report them!
