On Sunday, overall records of Maryland prep basketball teams won’t mean a thing … at least as far as the MPSSAA is concerned. You see, when they conduct their drawings, a two-game tournament any school plays during the season is not considered part of the schedule, which I consider — well, HOG WASH. It’s my contention, and always will be, they are games played and ALL games should count on the schedule.
At any rate, I’ll not continue to harp on this at the moment and instead, look at unofficial records of teams prior to Friday’s games ahead of the Sunday seedings.
In Boys Class 3A, if things ended now North Hagerstown and Urbana would be deadlocked at 15-3 for the second seed. Tuscarora, at 17-2, would have the top seed. South Hagerstown is 11-6 and could get a 4-seed.
In Boys Class 2A, Oakdale is in a class by itself at 18-1. The nearest team in Poolesville at 14-5. Locally, Williamsport stands 11-7.
In Boys class 1A, it appears Brunswick, at 12-7, should be the East Region top seed without a challenge and Allegany the top seed in the West.
In Girls Class 3A, South Hagerstown and Damascus unofficially are locked together with 16-2 records. We’ll see what happens there.
In Girls Class 2A, it is somewhat of a logjam with Walkersville (15-4), Poolesville (14-4), South Carroll (13-5) and Oakdale (13-6). Locally, Williamsport is 11-7.
And finally, in Girls Class 1A, Boonsboro should be the top seed in the East at 13-6 while the West is loaded with Southern Garrett (17-1), Mountain Ridge (14-2), Fort Hill (13-4) and then Hancock at 13-5).
Again, these numbers are unofficial but should be darn close heading into Friday’s games. The draw is Sunday morning at 10 a.m. and should be on the MPSSAA website around noon or shortly thereafter (you hope).
