Prior to the Hedgesville-Jefferson boys basketball game on Friday I had the chance to sit down with veteran coach Bob Starkey and talk about many things.
Two notes on Starkey: First, he looks great at age 77 and has come out on top against a few bumps in the road recently on some health issues.
Secondly: It was like the Joe Paterno million-dollar question — how long will he coach boys basketball? His grandson — Garrett Grantham — is a freshman on the Jefferson team and a pretty good bet to be a good one down the road.
Starkey said if his health holds out, he’d like to go through Grantham’s high school career and he said the school wants him to stick around. Should Starkey continue to coach until his grandson graduates, he will have reached 80 early in the basketball season.
He keeps on ticking and hopefully will do so for some time yet in the future.
